What’s involved?

  • Meetings are held on members’ farms
  • You meet 8 to 10 times a year
  • Meetings normally last two hours
  • Members decide the topics for discussion
  • All discussions are confidential to the group
  • All meetings are facilitated by a Teagasc advisor

    ACCBank EBI Discussion Group Winners

The €5,000 first prize in the EBI Dairy Discussion Group Competition was won by the Deise 1250 group, based in County Waterford. The prizes were presented to the winning groups in Fermoy, Co. Cork, today Wednesday, 26 January.

Over 1,000 dairy farmers competed in the first phase of the competition which was open to established dairy discussion groups. The competition for new and recently established dairy discussion groups is still running.

The EBI competition promotes better breeding on dairy farms. Its €42,000 prize fund was sponsored by ACCBank and the competition is run in association with Teagasc, ICBF and the Farmers’ Journal.

Speaking at the EBI awards Sean Farrell, national agri-manager at ACCBank said: "Through this competition dairy farmers have been encouraged to improve the quality of their breeding herds. ACCBank is delighted to continue our sponsorship of the EBI Competition."

ICBF’s Andrew Cromie congratulated all the farmers who participated in the competition saying "This event has helped dairy farmers to focus on better breeding to improve their herds which is one of the best investments they can make on their farm."

Speaking on behalf of the judges in the competition, Teagasc dairy specialist, George Ramsbottom said: "High EBI leads to higher profits on farms. This competition has encouraged farmers to work together through discussion groups and adopt a more business-like approach to running their farm businesses."

Jack Kennedy, dairy editor of the Irish Farmers’ Journal congratulated all the winning groups and those that participated in the competition.
