Dementia

Dementia is a persistent disorder of the mental processes that is caused by brain disease or injury. Dementia gradually leads to memory disorders, personality changes, and impaired reasoning.

Alzheimers

Alzheimer's disease is the most common and well-known type of dementia that causes problems with memory, thinking and behavior. The symptoms of Alzheimers disease usually develop slowly and get worse over time. These symptoms will have a gradual impact on a person's ability to remember and to manage everyday life.

Early Signs

The early signs and characteristics of dementia may vary from person to person, and from one type of dementia to another. However, some general early signs and symptoms include:

  • Memory loss;
  • Changes in mood and behaviour;
  • Difficulty completing familiar tasks;
  • Losing track of dates and times;
  • Confusion in familiar surroundings or situations;
  • Problems with language, difficulty finding the right word
  • Difficulty in following conversations;
  • Trouble understanding visual images and spatial relationships;
  • Difficulty in planning and solving problems;
  • Loss of interest in hobbies and pastimes;
  • Poor judgement (e.g. difficulty managing money);
  • Repeating question or statement many times.
