One Step Forward is a support and information group for parents of children with Cerebral Palsy in Limerick and surrounding areas.

MARCH 2014 MEETING

This month marks the third year of One Step Forward and the group marked the occasion with cake.  One Step Forward were sucessful in securing funing from the HSE to cover St Gabriels Hydrotheraphy pool and so the Hallwick classes will continue on Sunday mornings. Also aditional physiotheraphy input will be offered at classes on occasion.  Geraldine also held a meeting with Aisling Ryan to Introduce One Step Forward; discuss childrens services and discuss the potential for a specialised Cerebral Palsy Clinic. Our next meeting will include a workshop on Stress Management.

FEBRUARY 2014 MEETING

This week Co-ordinator Geraldine Monaghan will present One Step Forward to Carmel Mc Loughlin a HSE representative. The purpose of the meeting it to discuss how the group is progressing with Hallwick and other activities.  In prepartion for this meeting each familiy compiled a testimony on the benefits of Hallwick for their child and compiled into a mini brochure to present to the HSE. A 2014 business plan was also prepared and presented to the group for discussion.

Our Guest Speaker this month was Cliona Hogan a Masters Student in adaptive Physical Education at UL who also has Cerebral Palsy.  Cliona shared her life experieces with with reference to mainstream versus adapted sports and education.  The presentation was very thought provoking for all families at it gave insight into life challenges that Cliona has had to overcome.  In the coming weeks Cliona will compete in the rowing championships in Boston and trasfer to Virginia University and One Step Forward wish her every success.

Next Meeting: Tuesday March 12th at 8.15 Monaleen GAA club all parents of Children with Cerebral Palsy are welcome to attend.

JANUARY 2014 MEETING

Co-ordinator Geraldine Monaghan welcomed all members back after the Christmas break.  The group had two lovely outings over the Christmas with the children Christmas party on October 15th and a Careers dinner patry on December 18th.  The children and parents enjoyed the bowling and a special visit from Santa. We enjoyed a presentation from Cerebral Palsy Ireland with a summary of the purpose of CP Ireland introducing a new adapted bike.  Group members will hold a meeting with the HSE in mid February to present how the Hallwick classes have been going; familys were asked to write a brief note on the benefits of Hallwick for their child.  Many member of the group were dissappointed at the recent media coverage and top up payments to the seniour staff of the CRC and it was agreed that a letter would be drafted and posted to the Irish Times to express the views of the group.  

There was some discussion with regard to Guest speakers for 2014 and the following were seen as key themes, A group psychotherapy session for peer support; a lifting course; assisstive technology; a presentation on Epilepdsy amoung other key topics.  It was agreed that a draft business plan would be drawn up to capture the plan of key activities for 2014.

NOVEMBER 2013 MEETING

The presenter for our November meeting was Nuala Kelly and her husband who have been involved in the development of a Website caled Bubble school or My Revision Made Easy.  Information such a school texts books an be scanned or typed into the webpages and then broken down into the key points or bubbles.  This activity will assit the learner to absord information and prepare revision notes; the tool could also be utilised for preparing presentations.  Parents can have an annual subscription for 50 euro and teachers have complementary access.

  • Current funds in the One Step Forward account are Euro 3665 with a recent donation of 1,800 raised during the women mini marathon in October.
  • The group agreed that we will continue with the Halliwick swimming classes and classes will continue on Sunday mornings from 9-10 a.m.
  • One Step forward Chritmas dinner will take place on December 13th at Freddies Bistro at 8pm and the Kiddies bowling and burger Christmas party will take place on the 15th of December.  
  • Meeting will resume again on January 14th at 8.15pm in the Monallen GAA Club- All parents of children with CP are welcome to join in.

OCTOBER 2013 MEETING

One Step Forward Families enjoyed an informative presentation by guest speaker Sara Mc Gown; an Occuptional Therphist.  The presentation included the role of an occupational theraphist in the childs functionality in play, leisure and outside the home.

Fourteen women will participate in the Womens Limerick Mini Marathon on October 12th to show support and raise funds for One Step Forward activities.  Hallwick classes are progressing well; children from the Spina Bifida association may join us for classes on Sunday mornings.  Classes will cease for a  Mid term break on the 27th of October and 3rd of November.There will be a yoga and massage class at the Spina Bifida Association on Monday October 21st from 4-6pm facilitated by Lillian Edwards.

The next One Step Forward Meeting will take place On November 12th at 8.15 PM at the Monaleen GAA clubhouse.

 

 

 

SEPTEMBER 2013 MEETING

One Step Forward Families recommenced meetings on Septmeber 12th after the summer break.  Over the summer months there was quite a few activities including a fundraiser art exhibition in conjuction with The Gallery Superquinn Castletroy, where 805 euro was raised; also Joes sister organised a Ceili and 300 euro was raised. Outings during the summer included a boat trip in Killaloe and hourse riding in Adare which the children and families enjoyed.  Photos will be added to the Website Gallery.  Also most member of the group partiicated in the Snowdrop program.

All families look forward to activites for children over the coming months including Hallwick swimming commencing on Sunday the 15th of September and yoga/massage classes to commence on Septmeber 23rd. There is also some discussion regarding Music Theraphy for the children.  The Spina Bifida Association has invited One Step Forward to participate in a Gathering on Saturday the 28th of September. Guest speakers will include Gerry Maguire author of the recently published book Walk Away and Forget Him and a seminar on Nutrition.  Special Needs service providers will also have stalls to provide information to families.  The group will also have a Carers Coffee morning on Septmeber 18th at Castletroy Park Hotel at 10 a.m. 

Next meeting will take place on October 8th, our Guest speaker is Sara Mc Gown an Occupational Therapist. 

NOVEMBER 2012 MEETING

Hello there, great to see everyone Tuesday night. We all enjoyed Rosemary Ryan from Limerick Sports Partnership. Her presentation was very informative in relation to the currant initatives in the areas of sport and disability. Contact info@limerickcitysport.ie to veiw upcoming events. Nicole Haren R.N.I.D was our second guest speaker and Nicola was a joy to listen to as she imparted vital information on taking care of our backs while lifting and using equipment. A huge thanks to Nicola for giving of her time and  we really valued her expertise.
There won't be any  meeting in December as we are having a Christmas night out. So wishing everyone a very happy and peaceful Christmas and looking forward to seeing everyone in the New Year.

OCTOBER 2012 MEETING
                                                               
Hello there, October meeting had to be cancelled due to unforseen circumstances.We commenced music therapy with Tommy Hayes during the month  which has been a great success we are meeting every second Wednesday up until christmas.Our guest speaker for November is Nicole Haren.Nicola workers as a staff nurse and manual handling instructor with the HSE.The talk will give parents some guidelines and tips on backcare while lifting and using equipment. Rosemary from Limerick Sports Partnership is going to join us also and we look forward to seeing her.

SEPTEMBER 2012 MEETING
                                                               
Hello there, great to see everyone Tuesday night. Summer flew by. In July we had a family outing to Bunratty that was a great success and we had lunch in the Bunratty Manor where they took excellent care of us. In August we brought the kids to Delta Fun Park and in late August all the parents went out for a meal to round off the summer.
Thanks to everyone who contributed money to the group we really appreciate all funds raised. Mary Monaghan donated €100 from the Caherlistrane Céilí fundraising event. Special thanks to DJ Whitty who raised €500 and his friend Pat Gillan who also raised €350 from the Great Limerick Run. We are very excited to be commencing music therapy with Tommy Hayes on the 19th September with funds raised.
Nick Harrison [086 0472051]the FAI's Munster 'Football For All' Club Development Officer kindly joined our group and was very informative of the FAI's aproach to including children of all disabilities in football.This programme is open to children of all abilities aged 6-14years. Nick can be contacted for any futher details. We were delighted to have Phil Ryan[087 2350561] a BodyTalk practitioner, who has her own private practice in Clarina, Co.Limerick. Phil gave us an excellent insight into the bodytalk system, a progressive therapy in treating individuals in a holistic way while honouring the innate wisdom of the body.Thanks also to Patricia Insley[086 8556564] who accompanied Phil and who is involved in organising the Access BodyTalk Training Course. Finally next month we hope to have Nicole Haren a staff nurse and manual handling instructor working with the HSE to give us some guidelines and tips on backcare while lifting and using equipment. Rosemary from Limerick Sports Partnership is going to join us also and we look forward to seeing her.

MAY 2012meeting
                                                               
Hello there, great to see everyone Tuesday night. April/May has been a very busy and active month for the group. Annmarie and Catherine kicked it off with a fantastic interveiw with Joe Nash on Live 95fm. They spoke about their own personal journeys as parents with children with CP and also spoke about the aims of the group. For any one who didn't hear it there is a podcast dated April 24th on Joe Nash Live 95FM and its definitely worth a listen.
One step forward particapted for the first time in the Great Limerick Run. We are very grateful to our own Denis Sutton and Mike Sutton of Munster soft drinks who generously sponspored the polo-shirts for the event. Una and her sister Annmarie raised €600, thanks a million, and there was a fabulous photograph of them on the Limerick Chronicle on Tuesday the 8th May. Maurice also participated in the run and was said that we will all have to get ready to do it next year! Just to say a big thank you to everyone who ran the race.
We hope to commence hydrotherapy in September with the funds raised.
Just to mention, as summer is here, Joe and  I are away for June and we have outings organised for the kids in July and August so it will be September before we have a formal meeting again. A big thanks to the Moneleen GAA for the use of their premises all year. I hope everyone has a great summer.

APRIL 2012meeting

Hello there, great to see everyone Tuesday night. We were all so impressed by our guest speaker, physiotherapist Ursula Blake. We, as a group, are so gratefull to Ursula for giving of her time and sharing her vast experience with us. We all gained valuable information and tips that will be helpfull to us as parents. Thanks again to Ursula  for her kindness and generousity in all that she shared with us.
Just to mention that One Step Forward had a stand at the Special Needs Parents Association night on the March the 27th and that turned out to be a great opportunity for us to meet other parents,organisations and services. I would also like to say that  we would love to welcome any parents that were there on the night to drop in any night to our group.

March2012meeting

Hello there, great to see everyone Tuesday night, we celebrated ourt first anniversty together as a group with triple choclate cake and cream!!!!.Been our 1st anniversty together we reflected on the year that had passed and everyone agreed that it has been great to have met parents in the same suitation as themselves and the sharing of information and experiences has been an invaluble resourse for each and every one of us in the group and that we are all continuing to learn every night we meet.We also felt asa group that we would love if there were any other parents out there would like to come along and join us we would be only thrillered to see you or if you wanted to ring me first Geraldine 0863052632 please feel free to do so.
We received a most generous donation of 1000 euro[what a fantastic present gift] from Mr. Peter Quinn who who kindly presented this cheque to Catherine McKenna from a fundraising advent that he ran all the way up the country in  Buncrana Co Donegal.Limerick.Sincere thanks to you Peter and Catherine's brother Ciaran who was also involved in the fundraising event we at One Step Forward are so grateful from your geneoursity and kindness.
Our guest speaker for April is Ursula Blake ,Ursula is a phisotherapist with extensive years of  experience and expertise in the area of Cerebral Palsy and we are very grateful to Ursula from agreeing to come and  share her insight and wisdom with the group in April.

February 2012meeting

Hello there, great to see everyone tuesday night. Our guest speaker on the night was Senthil, the manager of Little Steps Rehabilitation centre,Patrickswell,Co. Limerick.See website www.firststeps.ie, for more information on the services and treatment provided.It was a highly informative night as Senthil shared his insight and knowledge of his many years of  working as a charthered phisotherapist with children with cp .We are very grateful for the time Senthil spent with the group and he was very excited that parents had got together to form One Step Forward  and has kindly offered to give another session to the group on pratical tips for working with our children with cerebral palsy.Looking forward to seeing everyone for our 1st anniversty in March.

Happy new year to everyone!!!!!!
Hello there, great to see everyone tuesday night,we had a fantastic night out in December definity to be repeated again!!!!!One Step Forward are very grateful to TEDCASTLE LUBRICANTS who gave a corporate donation of 500euro in January 2012 what a great start to the new year it was a personal friend of mine Mairead Sweeney who nominated our group and we are very thankful to you Mairead. Looking forward to seeing everyone in Febuary (valentines nite,dont forget!!!) Our guest speaker on the night is P.Senthikumear, the manager of Little Steps Rehabilitation centre,Patrickswell,Co. Limerick.He has kindly offered to give approx. a one hour session on cerebral palsy and the physical therapy they provide in his pratice.

October 2011 meeting
Hello everyone
Hello there, great to see everyone tuesday night eventhough the Ireland soccer match was on!!!
Everyone commented on how much they enjoyed Croom and loved the photos!!
The big news for tonight was that One Step Forward will receive €2,000 from the HSE lotto funding. Orginally we had been refused this grant but fortunately for us this sum of money hadn't been utilised  in another area and we are very grateful to be in receit of this grant.  I would like to thank Asia Pasinska(a physiotherapist with the HSE)who gave a presentation to the group on supportive foot wear for children with cerebral palsy. The prices are very resonable. These shoes are very stylish and can be worn with a.f.o and orthotics. Asia works from her home in Corbally and for further details check up www.brogaibeaga.com    Just to mention we wont be having any meeting in December as we are going to have a social night instead,so our next meeting will be the last for 2011!!!

Hello there! Great to see everyone
in Croom on Sunday. It was a huge success, especially the tea and scones! It was fantastic that it didn't rain and the venue was ideal. Of course the highlight of the day was meeting all the children. Roll on the next adventure!

 

August 2011 meeting

Hello there, great to see everyone tuesday night it was especially
great to welcome another new parent to the group. We are going to organise the date for the fun day at the end of September in Croom Rectory .
In relation to the lotto funding grant  which One step forward had applied for I am very disappointed to say that we were refused  funding  by the HSE and the  area managers of disability in Limerick/Tipperary  who santion this funding. In our next meeting  Patricia Ellen Barrett has kindly offered to travel from Killarney to facilitate a session on self care.Patricia is a councellor and has extensive experience in working with individuals and groups.

JULY 2011 meeting

Hello there, great to see everyone tuesday night it was especially
great to welcome three new parents to the group. We are hoping to organise a fun day for September
in Croom Rectory dates to be decided at next meeting.

APRIL 2011 MEETING
     Hello everyone

Geraldine here, we had another great turn out last night in Monaleen G.A.A and also some new people joined us which is always a great treat.Many thanks to our guest speaker who herself is a parent of two adults with cerebral palsy,she was indeed a inspiration to us all.One of the pearls of wisdom our speaker shared with us that caring for a child with cerebral palsy is" a marartion not a sprint ".
In our next meeting we have Bernadette Kenny a qualified teacher in the anat baniel method which specializes in working with children,especially children with physical disability.See website www.anatbaniel.com for indept overveiw of the work of this remarklable lady Anat Baniel.
