As far as possible automate the components of your website that can be automated. For example, don’t rely on manual updating of your sitemap. Make sure that the sitemap is always up to date by implementing the appropriate software for your CMS. Most Content Management Systems (CMS) provide the tools or add-ins to automatically generate a sitemap for your Website.
Think about your content and present it to your audience in a range of ‘flavours’. For example, in addition to providing a news worthy article on an article page, provide this content as a (RSS) feed, a snapshot menu, searchable content etc. However, if you present the same data on a number of pages, be sure to use a canonical link back to the primary article so that you are not penalised for duplicate content.
It is good practice to enhance your content by turning unstructured data into more structured data. This can be achieved through the use of rich snippets. Authorship, Product Lists, Calendar Events and Photo Galleries are some examples of areas well suited to rich snippets. The mark-up used in Rich snippets allows the major search engines to better understand and categorise your content which improves your organic ranking and ultimately drives more visitors to your site.
Many people create blogs for the sake of blogging but that is not the way to do it. Remember, the key metric for Bloging success is the number of readers, the number of followers and ultimately the number of relevant back-links that your blog can generate. Also, never forget that News, Humour, (Controvertial) Opinions drive traffic. Use the tools available to you like Google Trends and Social content to identify topics that may be of interest to an audience.
